Schoolteam De Lettertuin met schaakleraar Karel van Delft
Online schaakmatch Herzel school - De Lettertuin
Het schaakteam van obs De Lettertuin uit Ede heeft een online match gespeeld tegen de Herzel school uit Yehud in Israël.
Tien spelers van beide scholen namen maandagmiddag 20 april plaats achter een computer. Ze speelden via de Duitse Playchess server, onder leiding van de Hamburgse arbiter Martin Fischer.
Tijdens de match was er Skype contact. Enkele kinderen spraken in het Engels met kinderen uit Israël.
De match was een initiatief van de Israëlische grootmeester Boris Alterman. Coach van De Lettertuin is Karel van Delft, die schaakles geeft op de Leonardo afdeling van de school.
Het team van De Lettertuin bestaat uit Fadi, Mats, Nathan, Jeroen, Tom, Quint, Rogier, Rutger, Rosemarie en Ilan.
Het motto van de wereldschaakbond FIDE is ‘Gens Una Sumus’. Dat betekent ‘Wij zijn één familie’. Daar sluit dit schaakinitiatief goed bij aan. Schaken is een universele taal waarmee mensen uit de hele wereld contact met elkaar kunnen hebben.
Diverse kinderen speelden meer dan één partij. Uiteindelijk bepaalde de arbiter de uitslag op 10,5-5,5 in het voordeel van De Lettertuin.

Verslag GM Boris Alterman:
The venue for the math was popular server Playchess, when Children aged 7-10 played on electronic boards, in a 10 versus 10 line up, with each team seated in their respective sophisticated computer classroom.
The match was organized and conducted by Grandmaster Boris Alterman and Luba Alterman, directors of the education program "Alterman Chess ", which is being implemented in schools and kindergartens in Yehud-Monosson - the only city in Israel which includes the chess program into their curriculum in all schools and kindergartens.
During the match both teams combined competitive fighting spirit, along with patience and sportsmanship towards each other.The mayor of Yehud Yaela Maklis, who led and supported the implementation of the chess program into the Yehud school system, came to encourage the children:: 'such an interactive encounter enables students to meet young people their own age, from different cultures and backgrounds, expand their horizons and to shape themselves as global citizens. Chess develops the child's thought and concentration and gives it management capabilities and creativity. This is a process that is important to me to instill in educational institutions, so that our children will benefit and expand their horizons with further educational areas as well', the mayor said.
